Blog Tour Stop!! Review: Love and Skate by Lila Felix

Love and Skate (Love and Skate #1)
by Lila Felix
Genre: Contemporary Romance

On the rink she’s tough, she’s a leader, she’s fast and she’s the epitome of a rebellious girl. But Nellie’s been hurt, only once, but it was enough to make her look at life through different eyes and off the rink she’s a timid girl who loves with no pretenses.
A long time ago Owen Black was betrayed by the girl he thought he loved and the guy he called his best friend. The anguish set off a domino effect of negativity in his life and he never has fully recovered. He meets Nellie Forrester and thinks he can let it go for her.
But how can you love someone when the wounds from your past are still wide open?

My Rating: 4 Coffee Cups!!

This book was relatively short and sweet. You'd think, looking at the hard core cover it would be just that-hard core. But the characters have amazing hearts of gold and are vulnerable and loving and only slightly damaged.

Nellie is the epitome of what you would think was a bad-ass chick. She's not only on a Roller Derby team, but it's captain. She starts the book with blue hair (although that changes repeatedly as time goes on). She's got tattoos and piercings up the wahzoo. But underneath all of that she's sweet and innocent and a little hesitant to hand out her heart. To say she has parental issues would be putting it mildly and this is the root of her almost shy tendencies. Her parents are judgmental and awful and her mother needs to never procreate again.

Owen is the epitome of what you would think was a bad ass dude. He's tall, muscular and pierced and tatted up. But that wasn't him at all. He was just a marine biology student trying to put his somewhat choppy past behind him. He has a mom and brothers that he adores and a best friend who has his back. As Nellie is hesitant to hand out her heart, Owen is hesitant to hand out his trust having had it brutally smashed to smithereens in the past.

Both characters are constantly judged and most times dismissed for their appearances and when they find each other it's like a burst of fresh air for each of them. Reading their love story simply makes you happy and puts a smile on your face. They fall hard and they try and put each of their fears and reservations aside for one another which proves to be easier said than done.

You will fall in love with book and it's characters quickly. This book is marked as New Adult Contemporary, but Lila Felix does an amazing job of toeing the line between NA and YA. There are some steamy parts, but she doesn't go full on fire hot. Also, although Owen has his issues, there is no heart wrenching, gut punching angst to be seen. Although I have been gravitating towards that lately, this book was a nice respite from that.

Tidbits on the Author:

Lila Felix made the decision to write a book after being encouraged by friends. She is a stay at home mom to three wild children and three boisterous dogs. Between writing books she loves read and watch sappy 80's movies. Favorite things: ice cream, anything purple, roller derby and any kind of music she can get her hands on. If you're looking for her, try looking under Cypress trees in the swamps of Louisiana.
