Blog Tour Stop! Review: Time Spell by TA Foster

Time Spell (Ivy Grace #1) by T.A. Foster
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Review by: Amy D.

Blurb:

Ivy Grace is learning that magic--and love--are all about the right timing.

Follow the adventures of this spirited young Southern woman as she embarks upon a successful new career writing novels and movies that explore romantic mysteries of the past.

Ivy, a witch who spends her days practicing her brand of good magic in a sleepy little city, often travels back in time to observe events of yesteryear and turn them into compelling stories for her modern-day fans. But as her uncanny ability to weave enthralling historic tales lands her in the limelight, she quickly finds that fame sometimes comes with a price.

Evil forces now know who she is and threaten to reveal her family’s most sacred magical secrets.

With the help of her ruggedly handsome editor and a sexy supernatural ex-boyfriend, Ivy must unravel history while fighting to keep these ominous forces at bay.

Will Ivy be able to make the ultimate sacrifice for the people she loves the most?

My Rating: 3 1/2 Coffee Cups!!

T.A. Foster's Time Spell begins with Ivy running for her life from unkown assailants. I was immediately intrigued, opening a story in the middle of the action piqued my interest and I read forward impatiently to see what was in store for this character. Just when I thought Ivy would be caught, the chase ended and readers are introduced to Ivy Grace, main character, narrator, witch. Ivy Grace is just a regular girl. Or so she would like to see herself. Its not that she isn't proud to be a witch, she would like to live as normal a life as possible as a daughter, sister and author. Catching the guy of her dreams, her editor, Jack, would be a nice addition as well. At this point in her life, Ivy's biggest challenge is adjusting to life as a newly famous author while keeping her identity as a witch hidden from the world. Because, as a witch, rule number one is never to reveal your powers to non-witches. A rule that has consequences, ones that Ivy finds herself facing when a threatening letter from a mysterious source finds its way into Jack's mailbox, sending the two on a race to save their families and themselves.

Knowing from the first scene that Ivy would find herself in danger, I found myself again impatient to get to the promised action. The action may not have started up right away, but the world of witchcraft that Ivy Grace is a part of was enough to keep me going and hoping for some magical showdowns. Like all witches, Ivy has her own power that others do not possess. She has perfected time travel, allowing her unique access to inspiration for her novels. For the readers this spells two stories in one, seamlessly flowing between

Ivy's present life in Sullen's Grove, North Carolina and 1968 Vegas.

Supernatural Romance novels are a favorite of mine, and Foster does not disappoint. Ivy falling for Jack is more than just boy meets girl. If a relationship develops, Ivy will have to keep a major part of herself secret from the man she loves. Personally, I wondered why she wouldn't just date another witch so she could be open about her powers. Then I got my answer. When Finn's character is introduced, I was instantly on my guard. I just knew from Foster's description through Ivy's eyes that he spelled trouble. In particular, trouble for the possibility of a romance between Ivy and Jack. Love triangles never work out well for those involved, but for the reader, they promise conflict, tears, indecisiveness and steamy interactions. I almost always know which suitor I am rooting for by the end of the first book in a series, but in this case, I am still undecided. The relationship between Ivy and Finn may have been filled with drama and broken hearts, but there is still somewhat of a mystery surrounding her ex. Ivy seems to really want to move forward with Jack, but she feels a pull when it comes to Finn, possibly because he is also a witch.

I will admit that when I began reading Time Spell, I wondered how the author was going to connect the action in Vegas, 1968, to Ivy's current life in Sullen's Grove. No spoilers here, I will just say that I was pleased with how Foster brought the timelines together. My favorite part of this novel comes at the end in the form of a personal revelation. The end of this time travelling narrative gave way to a new beginning for Ivy Grace. Everyone she cared about were safe, and she had found power in herself that made her proud to be a witch and feel OK about being more than just a "regular" girl.

Tidbits on the Author:

T.A. Foster is a Southern girl whose heart and spirit are connected to the beach. She grew up catching rays and chasing waves along the North Carolina Outer Banks and now resides in the state with her adventurous pilot husband, two children and two canine kiddos.

Her long love affair with books started at an early age and as soon as she was able, she transformed imaginative stories into words on paper. Time Spell is T.A.’s debut novel, and the first in a series about a very adventurous, clever, and magical girl named Ivy.

T.A. has an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a graduate degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University.  When she’s not chasing her two-legged and four-legged children or trying to escape for date night, you can find her reading, writing or planning her next beach trip.
