Darker Days

A little sin can be deadly...

Jessie Darker goes to high school during the day, but at night she helps with the family investigation business.

Cheating husbands and stolen inheritances? They’re your girls—but their specialty is a bit darker. Zombie in your garage? Pesky Poltergeist living in your pool? They’ll have the problem solved in a magical minute. For a nominal fee, of course...

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Seven deadly ones, in fact.

They’ve got five days to recapture the Sins before they're recalled by the box, taking seven hijacked human bodies with them. Easy peasy—except for one thing...
There’s a spell that will allow the Sins to remain free, causing chaos forever. When the key ingredient threatens the life of someone she knows, Jessie must make the ultimate choice between love and family—or lose everything.

My Rating: 5 Coffee Cups!

"I guess I just inherited my dad's darker outlook."

Jessie Darker is a girl after my own heart. Realistic and Sassy, she follows a set of rules she came up with to protect herself and her family from anything that may come their way. Half human and half demon, Jessie works with her mother, Klaire, in the family business, the Darker Agency. To most of the population of Penance, New York, this mother/daughter team are detectives that handle the usual case, cheating spouses, deadbeat dads, missing persons, etc. However, through word of mouth, there are those who know that these ladies are the go to duo for all things supernatural.

I am in love with the characters that Jus Accardo has created in Darker Days. I find myself envious of Jessie's confidence and resolve. She has a great relationship with her Mom, built on open communication, trust and respect. These two women are no sloths; they both know what needs to be done to keep their business and household running and they both rise to the challenge.

Jessie has a quick wit and rushes head first into danger, something that is not in short supply in her world. Up until this point, danger was almost commonplace for Jessie and her mother. Jessie prided herself on her vast knowledge of all things Non-human, or Otherworldly, as the detectives called them. According to Jessie, normal case are "boo-ring" and excluding zombies and pet possession (two of her least favorite types of case to deal with), she loves going head to head with a big bad. I would almost call her a glutton for punishment. She was almost greedy for danger, for she felt no greater adrenaline rush than when dealing with an "alternative" case.

"Seven Sins.
Six innocent people.
Five days.
Piece of cake..."

Enter Lukas Scott, a human with an otherwordly problem, little time, and no one else to turn to except the Darkers. He had a case they could not refuse; catch the recently released Seven Deadly Sins before they were free from their bonds and destroyed humanity as they knew it. There was however, a twist. Lukas himself held Wrath inside of him and wanted the Darker family's help to free himself from the ties that bound him to the box that would again imprison him in 5 days time.

"Cute and sarcastic-- if I had a type, Lukas would be it. Too bad he was kind of annoying, a more importantly, one of the Seven Deadly Sins..."

Personally, Jessie had two problems when it came to this case. The first, the danger that came with battling sin. The second, her immediate attraction to Lukas. I loved reading the conversations between Jessie and Lukas. Jus Accardo created something wonderful with the relationship between these two characters. More than just teenage lust, Jessie and Lukas's took every opportunity they had in the short amount of time they were given to get to know each other. As the characters developed, so did their relationship. And as her feelings for Lukas grew deeper, Jessie began to see other aspects of her life in a new light, including the separate but forever together relationship her parents had to endure as a couple. Jessie had been wanting a chance to prove herself. Driven by her love for her parents, her best friend, and Lukas, this Darker detective proved she could make difficult choices and put all others above herself to keep them safe.

I rushed through Darker Days. I couldn't get enough of Jus Accardo's story. Even knowing that with each turn of the page I was closer to the last, I didn't slow my speed reading pace; I was greedy for more. I will be waiting impatiently for the next in this promising Young Adult series.
